Learning from the world's first university

The Jundishapur Academy is the world's first university established during the Sassanid Empire in old Persia. Studying this successful education model will give us (the 21st-century people) helpful insights into how to teach, learn and help society. Some unique features:

1- The moto on its entrance gate: “knowledge and virtue are superior to sword and strength”.

2- Physicians, scholars, and philosophers from different nations, including Iran, Greece, Rome, Egypt, India, and China.

3- Annual international congresses for knowledge and experience exchange between scholars of various nations.

4- Collecting different opinions and then, after many discussions and investigations, choosing the best model for education of the students.

5- Scholars did their best to solve the problems of the society in a logical and scientific manner to meet the needs of their community.

6- The policy of tolerance and avoidance of ethnic and religious prejudices.

7- The Jundishapur authorities believed that anyone who wants to learn science must have the required ethical characteristics, in addition to necessary talent.

8- A special highhanded selection policy had been implemented by the masters to accept only those with the highest merit.

9- It was necessary for the students to involve with the clinic from the beginning of their education beside learning the basic sciences.
